TheWellsboroAgitator - 149thRegimentReunion The Company "A" Boys
Last Tuesday there was a reunion of the 149th Regiment at Williamsport. Fifty veterans were present, and for many of them it was the first meeting since being mustered out at the close of the war. Among those present from this county were Surgeon William T. Humphrey, Chaplain J. F. Calkins, and members of Company A as follows: Lieutenant Blackwell, Lieutenant G. D. Brooks, G. H. Lawton, Alfred Boyden, Daniel Butler, L. H. Butler, A. O. Douglas, O. R. Warriner, Joshua Ingalls, S. A. Hiltbolt, R. E. Pond, Asa Smith, John E. Chaffee, H. D. Smead and Peter Paul. Captain A. B. Horton, was among the members of Company G. A committee was appointed to assist the State Committee in the erection of the monument for the Regiment on the Gettysburg battlefield, which is to be unveiled on July 1, 1888. It is the intention of the Regiment to go into camp on the battlefield on that day, and all are expected to arrive at Gettysburg on the day previous. The records show that the Regiment had a larger number of men killed at the battle of Gettysburg than any other regiment. Out of 420 men, 69 were killed; 50 of these were buried in the National cemetery at Gettysburg. Some are lying in graves marked “unknown.” It is the intention to have on the monument to be erected next summer the name of every man who was killed. A camp-fire was held in the evening, at which Rev. J. F. Calkins and Capt. A. B. Horton made addresses. It was a very enjoyable reunion. The attached photograph is that of my grandmother's grandfather; Harvey Fleming McCracken. Our family records indicate he was born Jan 28th, 1839. The (original) military discharge papers that I have indicate he joined B Company of the 149th Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers in August, 1862. It indicates he was discharged in July, 1865 from Washington DC. The military papers indicate he was born in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania. Also states he was 5'11", Sandy complexion, blue eyes, and sandy hair. On the back of his discharge papers it is handwritten 'Harvey McCracken is entitled to retain one musket' with the signature below that of one 'J B Hood' (?) (Wish that rifle was still in the family!)
Found some records that indicate he was WIA at Gettysburg.
Found some records that indicate he was WIA at Gettysburg.
Also have an original pension document that his widow was entitled to a $12 per month pension in 1912.
He married Mary Diana McCarthy (born Oct 2nd, 1848) in 1871. They had several children and made their way to the Gladwin Michigan area. Their daughter first daughter was Arra Belle McCracken (born 8-13-1873) who was my great-grandmother. I apparently have a lot of kin in the Clearfield County area; my Grandfather was a 'Curry', as in Curry Run. Other names involved in the family tree are McCarty and Fillion. The long Military Heritage of this Family continues,
